FAQs
Q. What’s the difference between Timber Glow® and XUV?
A. Timber Glow® is a transparent but coloured water based acrylic coating for exterior wooden structures
. XUV is a slightly harder acrylic/urethane water-based acrylic coating that may be used as an exterior colourless coating. It’s more suitable for exterior timber furniture, trim, doors, frames and for other applications
where matching surfaces are close to each other. It can be shaded to transparent colours, which enhance and lift the natural colour of timber without hiding the grain. The standard for both products is a satin finish, though they are
available in a gloss finish.

A. On new cladding a coat of Timber Sealer must be applied before the Timber Glow. It’s essential to coat all exposed surfaces, especially any end grain.

The Timber Sealer may be thinned with up to 10% water to assist its flow on the rough sawn timber and you should be sure to brush out any runs or thick areas of coating
. Timber Glow® can then be applied when the Timber Sealer is dry.

Q. What if my timber has gone grey?
A. The greyness is the result of unprotected light and weathering exposure of the timber. This results in degradation of the ‘lignin’ -the binder holding wood together.
In this condition the natural colour of the timber disappears and the fibres on the surface of the timber become loose and friable.
These fibres should be removed by thorough sanding prior or other means. If left on and over-coated they can part company with the solid
timber underneath and the coating film can come off with the dead fibres. It is always a good policy to lightly sand timber and dust off before coating.
If you have any doubts contact your Timber Glow® supplier.

A. Timber Sealer should be thinned as necessary with water – up to 10% especially on sawn timber.
It is essential not to leave thick areas of coating, as these may not dry properly.
The sealer is as its name suggests, just a sealer, and needs only to be applied once, or sometimes twice, to ensure total coverage.
Timber Glow® and XUV may also be thinned with water, but only to aid brushing/rolling, not to spread the material further.

Q. How many coats of Timber Glow® or XUV should I use?
A. On most work, a minimum of two coats of Timber Glow® or XUV should be applied. On Decking minimum of 3 coats. On weather or sun facing surfaces, more coats are advisable to achieve the maximum benefit of the product. The most important aspect is to achieve a minimum film build over the whole surface - this cannot be done by overspreading. Three thin coats will last twice as long as 2 thick coats.

Q. When I do re-coat, do I have to use sealer again?
